Spicy Bourbon and Orange Meatballs

This recipe was inspired by a pork rib dish which works great for meatballs! An interesting combination of flavors including cumin, bourbon, orange and chilli.

Ingredients

  • 900 grams pork mince
  • 2 onions (finely grated)
  • mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic (crushed)
  • smoked paprika
  • chilli powder
  • cumin
  • oregano
  • brown sugar
  • salt
  • vinegar
  • 1 egg
  • bourbon
  • onion powder
  • 400 gram tin diced tomatos
  • tomato sauce
  • dijon mustard
  • cinnamon powder
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 bay leaves
  • peel and zest of 1 orange
  • salt

Method

Step 1

Mix in a large bowl mince, 1 onion, 1 tsp mustard, 2 tsp garlic, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 3/4 tsp chilli powder, 1 tsp cumin, 2 tsp oregano, 1.5 TBS brown sugar, 1 egg, breadcrumbs, 1 tsp salt.

Step 2

Roll in balls (approx 2 TBS of mix per ball) and refrigerate for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Mix in a bowl 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup bourbon, 1 onion, diced tomatos, 2 TBS tomatoe sauce, TBS dijon mustard, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp cinnamon powder, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp mustard, 2 bay leaves and 1/2 peel of orange + 1/2 zest of orange.

Step 4

Caramelize meatballs in deep frying pan until brown on both sides. Pour over sauce mixture and bring to the boil. Cook on medium for 1 hour or until sauce thickens.

Step 5

Serve with baked potatoes and salad.
